The AS x LM capsule has roots in American denim history.

Created as a mutual admiration project between Are Studio and Lyle McGraw, the lineage of the capsule’s fabric starts with the story of Cone Mills.

Located in North Carolina, the legendary denim factory was known as a headquarters for selvedge denim. For over a century, Cone Mills partnered with designers around the world, collaborating with Levi Strauss as early as 1915. When the factory closed in 2017, the discontinued fabrics became collectors items, highly prized by designers and denim aficionados.

The Cone Mills deadstock denim selected by AS x LM for the capsule collaboration was made in the early 1990s as part of a move toward more wearable, durable blended denim, as opposed to stiffer all-cotton weaves. The fabric was woven on narrow shuttle looms, creating a self-finished edge to allow for natural fade over time.

The capsule was designed with wear in mind. Cecilia Bordarampe, founder and designer for Are Studio, prioritized versatility when conceptualizing the pairing. “I love the idea of a uniform – a concept I subscribe to during different moments in my life – something that can be made to look more elevated depending on accessorizing or made to look more casual to work or outings during the day.” Given the cultural relationship between denim and comfort, AS x LM’s Studio Shirt and Swoop Jeans add a contemporary twist to a time-honored tradition. “An all-denim suit makes me feel very put together, able to go anywhere and know that the fabric will wear in with me.”

Designed, cut and sewn in Los Angeles, the AS x LM capsule joins the Cone Mills legacy as a historic piece of the American denim story.
